All About Amethysts
Amethysts have been coveted for over 2000 years, as the most sought after purple gemstone. Since purple was such an expensive color for dyes it has been heavily associated with royalty dating back to the 1st century AD. In some regions, even owning purple garments was outlawed! The discovery of amethyst became immensely popular with those in power, up until the 19th century. The discovery of large amethyst deposits in Brazil created an abundance of the stone that lowered the price and therefore the status of the gem.
Though still beloved, amethyst became more popular in jewelry for the rest of society especially since amethyst has such a rich purple color. In the quartz family, these gems are mostly found in igneous rock deposits. As with other quartz, it can be found within geodes and split open to display it’s natural crystalline structure.
With a Mohs hardness of 7, these gems are best worn in necklaces, earrings, or special occasion rings. Amethysts have been adorned in both their faceted and cabochon forms, as fashion has evolved the obsession with amethysts has stayed consistent.
